DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT CLAUSES

A clause is a group of words that contains (at least) a subject and a verb.

Two kind of clause :


An Independent clause is a complete sentence. It contains a subject and a verb. It can stand alone as a sentence.


A Dependent clause is not complete sentence. It must be conected to and independent clause.

Directions : Identify each of the clauses as independent or dependent.



  1. As a pilot that flies plane around the world
  2. The bird fly in the sky
  3. When she came and saw me
  4. During the storm that happened and destroyed the city last night
  5. After Mr.Wilson visited this country for business
  6. James always finihes his job on time
  7. Although he has met and said the truth to his boss
  8. Only five minutes, I can do it well
  9. Because she came late and sat down without permission
  10. By the time 2012, I will have graduated from his university
